ALLISON PARK – To help the Fawcett Fields Stream and Trail restoration project in Shaler Township, Rep. Lori Mizgorski (R-Allegheny) advocated for a $350,000 grant that was approved by the Department of Conservation and Natural Resources (DCNR).

“I was happy to help secure this funding for Shaler Township,” said Mizgorski. “Fawcett Fields is a park that many in our community love and enjoy. My family has many fond memories at the park, which also includes Little Pine Creek and the Eagle Canyon Nature Trail. I was happy to do my part in helping with this project.”

Over time, storm damage and stream erosion have caused the stream between McElheny Road and Wetzel Road to become over-widened, allowing for ongoing erosion and excess sediment to enter the stream. The stream restoration project will include installation of in-stream structures to redirect the stream away from the banks to limit future erosion. Other structures will be placed in streambanks to repair areas of significant erosion.

Additionally, the project includes widening the trails on the Eagle Canyon Nature Trail and adding bridges capable of supporting maintenance equipment for the trail and fields. Upon completion of the trail improvements, the Eagle Canyon Nature Trail will function as an extension of the regional trail network, allowing walkers and bikers the ability to connect to trails running through Etna, Millvale and into the Three Rivers Heritage Trail.
